Subject:Seattle?
Time:01:30 am
My fiancee Tanya and I have been talking about moving up to the Seattle area in a few years. Anyone live up there and can tell me how they like it? Am I going to miss the sun?

I'm sure others will disagree, but ... I lived in Seattle for a year, and the winter drove my absolutely crazy. The endless days of uniform gray were thoroughly depressing.

And the winter light there will not make a photographer happy.

I live in Seattle and have for 21 years (since my birth, actually). I like it more than any city, except maybe Chicago and New York. It is gorgeous in the spring, summer, and fall. Winter will try any photographer, but it's only four months a year. You can always hibernate.

Yes, it's grey in Seattle---it often rivals Portland for most overcast days in the year. However, I don't find it nearly as depressing as some other climates in the US (New England's heavy snow and rain storms and barren trees are awful). Seattle is famous for its rain, but it's more of a light spritzing than a downpour, so you can go outside without getting drenched.

i lived in new england most of my life, so i doubt it could be much worse than blizzards and stuff during the winter...i'm hoping.

I've never been to the Pacific Northwest, but my bf and I are also considering moving to either Seattle or Portland in a few years. It's a hiker's paradise there! So many waterfalls. :) Coming from SoCal, you'll probably miss the year round nice-and-sunny weather though.

I've lived here for 11 yrs and the grey does have a somewhat maddening effect sometimes. However, drive two hours east, cross over the pass and they have more Sun. So if you feel a sudden craving for the giant glowing orb, take a weekend trip to Columbia Gorge, Chelan and such (but it is much colder over there in the winter).

In late winter, we get a few weeks of random warmth and sun that reminds us why we still live here. It goes away for a month or so period again, but its a nice preview into spring.

Seattle is a nice city with plenty of quirks and also some amazing natural beauty. We have a rain forest and a desert, plus two mountain ranges and dozens of islands.

i went to olympic a couple years ago and really really enjoyed it, i like the fact there are so many national parks nearby and glacier is a good day's drive away, not too bad.

You should talk to my friend Sarah. http://fleur-delicious.livejournal.com She lived in Seattle for a few years and now lives in Santa Barbara.

I personally would choose Portland over Seattle. : )

Ditto! But I'm totally biased as I live here, haha. But! We do have less overall rainfall than Seattle, even though our average winter and summer temperatures are about the same. I think the transition from LA-area to Seattle might be easier though given that Seattle is a much bigger city than Portland, so PDX might seem a little too small for someone used to a really big metropolis. Unless, that is, they were looking for a big lifestyle change.
